CHICAGO PARK JAM SESSIONS II with TransWorld, Osiris, enjoi and Ball Park.

Photos by Blair Alley & Dave Chami

Last year we did it up huge in the north suburbs, but this year we set it off at Chicago’s Wilson skatepark with heads from Osiris and enjoi. What the Park Jam is, is a little nonchalant barbecue/autograph signing/skate jam—not a demo. Everyone skates, chills, gets free dogs, and even a bunch of free gear handed out by world-famous emcee/DJ C-Bot. And with the passing of our friend, coworker, and inspiration, Eric Stricker, we all donned Bears jerseys and did it all for him.

Once the grill and the generator were fired up, the Wilson skatepark was playing host to a handful of TransWorld SKATEboarding editors and photographers (Skin Phillips and Dave Chami in the house!); Osiris’ Corey Duffel, Taylor Bingaman, and Caswell Berry; enjoi’s Cairo Foster and Jose Rojo; new Chicago local Silas Baxter-Neal, or as DJ C-Bot called him out, the Bonus Bro (!), came out to shred. Once again Mr. Matt Snow (and his students); Steve Fauser, Jeremiah Babb and the other local homeys came out to show love. The vibe in the Windy City was high!

Once again DJ C-Bot spun Michael McDonald’s “What A Fool Believes” and a grip of other brilliant Yacht Rock jams to the amazement of all in attendance, and surely had Eric Stricker, Yacht Rock afficionado that he was, looking down with a smile.

Since it was such a hit last year, we threw another “Longest Hot Dog Ollie” contest. The Wilson park locals went nuts and two guys tied with a record-breaking 32 1/2 hot dog ollie end to end. They both got enjoi decks straight from the hands of Cairo Foster. Amazing.

Thanks again Chicago for coming out in droves to skate, have fun, and remember our brother Eric Stricker. We will see you again next year.

Watch for the video wrap-up of the days’ events, filmed and edited by Chris Ray, coming soon.

HAROLD HUNTER DAY III – OCTOBER 10, 2009 – NEW YORK CITY

The Harold Hunter Foundation, in partnership with Zoo York, New Era, CCS and DC Shoes, is proud to announce that the 3rd Annual Harold Hunter Day will take place Saturday, October 10th, in New York City.
HHDay_III_4X6_PARTY.indd
Established in 2006 after Harold’s untimely passing, HH Day III will once again unite NYC’s skateboarding community for a positive day of shredding in honor of the one-and-only, Harold Hunter.

An iconic figure in New York’s downtown scene, Harold’s larger-than-life personality and generous nature touched the lives of countless people around the world.  HH Day commemorates a life well lived by celebrating the things Harold loved most–skateboarding, music, friends, family, good times and of course, NYC.

On Saturday afternoon, October 10th, HH Day III will kick off at the Manhattan Bridge Skatepark on the corner of Pike and Monroe Streets in Chinatown.  An all-ages skate jam will run from 1–5pm with pop-up best trick events throughout the day, a massive product toss and beats courtesy of DJ Smoke LES and DJ Ani.

Once the skate jam is a wrap, an after-party will go down from 9pm-Midnight at KCDC Skateshop located at 90 North 11th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.  Open to the 21+ crowd only, Harold’s party people will enjoy free beverages and live music, with mini-ramp sessions in full effect all night.

As a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Harold Hunter Foundation relies on support from the skateboarding community to achieve its mission of providing “inner-city youth with valuable life experiences and opportunities for personal and professional growth by encouraging and sponsoring their interest in skateboarding.”

With this goal in mind, an exclusive run of limited edition HH Day III T-shirts and New Era hats will be sold to commemorate the event with proceeds benefiting the HH Foundation.  Both items feature a collage of classic Harold portraits shot and donated by long-time friend and acclaimed photographer/videographer, Giovanni Reda.  The T-shirt ($20) and hat ($35) will be available for purchase separately, or together as a kit ($50).

“As Harold once said, ‘Growing up in New York I never thought it would be like this, but now being here in New York it is like this,’” says Mark Nardelli, HH Day co-organizer and CCS brand director.  “Let’s keep things popp’n like Harold always did and have a good time skating with his extended NYC family.”

Harold Hunter Day III is made possible through generous support from the numerous people and companies that played an integral role in Harold’s life.  This year a special thank you goes out to Zoo York, New Era, CCS, DC Shoes, Shut, Camp Woodward, KCDC, 5boro, UXA, Brooklyn Brewery, Acapulco Gold, DQM, The Professionals A/V and DJ Equipment, Hopps, Alien Workshop, Habitat, Official, Verte, Billy’s Nuts, Frank151, Instant Winner, Famous, Savage, Off Bowery, Autumn, Anything, Rival, Homage, Supreme, Dah Shop, POST, Rockstar Bearings and Red Bull.

Black Label’s Drunk Tank was the grand finale at the 2009 Vans Downtown showdown, and it did not disappoint. Twelve rail, banked hubba and an out ledge with a giant drop, there was plenty for the skaters who were still walking to get down on. Nick Merlino skated hard all night, and took first place on the Drunk Tank. Billy Marks, rifled off tons of tricks down the stairs and took second while Blind’s Felipe Ortiz took third.

Black Label’s Drunk Tank Results:
1. Nick Merlino $2,500
2. Billy Marks $1,500
3. Felipe Ortiz $1,000

Creature always comes up with some insane obstacle for the Downtown Showdown, and this year was no different. The third spot of the night was the Hesh Cross, and it was insane to watch. People coming from three ways, transition on all sides and a mini quarter pipe on top. There were some collision’s, Creature’s own Neil Heddings was a victim and got taken out early. Coming out top was Black Label’s Vince Del Valle, who was ripping the cross the whole session.

1. Vince Del Valle $2,500
2. Angel Ramirez $1,500

Hopefully you remember this unfortunate incident when a young skater got stopped by an overly aggressive (to put it lightly) Baltimore cop. And it’s hard to believe, but that officer is back patrolling the streets. So, check out Zach Stow’s unpleasant (again, to put it lightly) encounter with San Francisco’s Officer Schwab. So, is threatening to break an arm like a twig and kicking a handcuffed kid into a cop car part of the arrest process? We’re just saying… But you make the call.

The second spot of the night was Flip’s Extremely Sorry. A giant pyramid with a gap in it, some curved ledges and some mushrooms? So, the results are in, and Jani Laitiala (who also won Top Pro last year), Nick Merlino, and Foundation all came out the big winners. But now’s the time to feast your eyes on these photographic gems from yesterday’s Showdown. It all started with a session on Girl’s Little China Girl (an homage to S.F.’s China Banks), then it was on to Flip’s Extremely Sorry set up, which included an ashtray pyramid, a bottle ledge, and mushroon mannys. Then we moved over to Creature’s Hesh Cross—yep, they brought the tranny—and finally finished it off with Black Label’s Drunk Tank and Twelve Step Program. Here’s the photos after 2009’s Showdown was all said and done. Videos are coming soon.

IN THE RED BULL MANNY MANIA DIGITAL FINALS

America’s Best Two-Wheel Tricking Amateurs to Put Their Video Parts Head to Head for Your Vote

September 15, 2009 – Santa Monica, CA – From coast to coast, amateur skaters have been putting their two wheels to the test, competing in the Red Bull Manny Mania Am series all summer long across 15 cities. Now the best skater from each stop will compete in the digital manny rumble royale, vying for your vote as the grand prize winner, with the chance to take home $7,000 in prizes and take their shooting, and their recognition, to the next level.
Highlights of each Red Bull Manny Mania winner’s run are now posted on Red Bull Skateboarding.com . So who will get bragging rights as the best manual am in the US? Will it be East Coast reppin’, or someone from Dirty South? A Navajo tribe member who skated in Long Beach or a part-time music producer from Baltimore?  The fans will decide who wins, and who will take home video equipment that will help one skater raise the bar on his video parts, perhaps taking them from You Tube to your next favorite skate flick.

The Positive Movement Alliance (PMA) is not an apparel company, a skateboard company, or an art company. It is all three wrapped into one universal
lifestyle brand targeted toward the “new urban” aficionado who understands that all things are connected; culture influences art and conflict eventually lends itself to compromise.

In 2008, Greg Carroll, Courtney Smith and Chase Tafoya conceived PMA to bring you: the consumer, creator, student, teacher, artist, dreamer and believer a “new urban” movement. These three young men discovered they had something in common; they were all looking for an opportunity to make a lasting impact in the urban crossover market place. They decided to put their individual talents together and use them to change the way people perceive activism. PMA gives the community more than T-shirts, skateboards and art pieces. Its goal is to prove to the masses that generations X and Y are ready to have their voices heard.

PMA is a collaboration of art, music, skateboarding, apparel, activism and philanthropic actions. It’s a company that encourages consumers to take charge of change by creatively engaging their communities. With collective decades of experience and knowledge in the afore mentioned industries, PMA’s creators are dedicated to implementing a movement that uses common elements of the “new urban” culture to encourage positivity.

Every product produced by PMA, from apparel to skateboarding equipment and paintings have a strong social, political or cultural message. Activism is a large part of PMA’s landscape, therefore 3% of the net revenue of each item sold will be donated to various charities and foundations attached to each PMA series.

Dead Precedence

Many of the youth in America seek to find riches not by hard work and dedication, but by the easy money of street life, (selling drugs, robbing, and gang-bangin’). They think this is what they have to do in order to survive. Choosing this lifestyle can ultimately lead to death - if not a certain physical death, death of one’s soul. We believe there needs to be a change. Today’s young people need to set a standard for others to follow. They need to kill the type of “precedence” that supports the easy way out.

Tricked

Some rappers brag in their songs about drinking, drugs, and violence. They sing about how they’ve been “shot 9 times”. Rapping has become so much more about image and street cred, than it is about skill or content. The kids who idolize these rappers are being tricked. They are being deceived into thinking the words are real. In reality, the rappers are not living this lifestyle at all. Many are being “tricked” themselves; being sold, and told what to write by wealthy record executives who’ve never experienced such a lifestyle. We need to think for ourselves.

ASR came and went once again without much hubbub. There was a mini ramp contest that the SPoT guys hosted. Andrew Langi ripped it and had some cash on hand at the Alphanumeric party that was held at Confidential. Malakye.com hosted the most fun event of the weekend—the Office Boyz contest for all us desk jockeys. Mike Fitz from TransWorld, Adam Sullivan from Fuel, Bama from Black Box, John Short from Volcom, and many more ripped it up and had fun. TWS actually won Best Team Spirit and a nice trophy. Since parties were few and far between, many of us descended on the TW Surf party at Bondi Bar where online editor Justin Cote and Miss TransWorld Surf, Heather Rose, were buying the drinks. Friday night, New Era invited us to its VIP suite at Petco Park to watch the Padre game. Free brew and food was provided and a few of us were lucky enough to catch foul balls.

Yep, after we took our Best Trick contest to the streets for the first time at the Portland Dew Tour, we’re once again stepping up our game and holding our Best Trick in Salt Lake City on an already existing skate spot, the Convention Center seven stair kinked rail. Jon Allie’s skated it, Adam Dyet’s skated it, so you’ll probably recognize it when you see it. But come Saturday night, with the highlights showing on NBC and skateboaridng.com on Sunday September 20th, this rail is gonna see more tricks go down on it than ever.

This year we saw something new as far as best trick contest go. Mixing it up in between the double set and water gap was the Barrel Jump. This was definitely a fun one to watch. Its pretty simple, go fast and jump as many as you can and try and hold on for dear life.  Chris Cole, Garrett Hill, Danny Scher, Slash and Kechaud Johnson were pushing it about as far you could go. After some pretty insane slams by all, Kechaud Johnson was finally able to hold on to one and take the win.

Words by Mackenzie Eisenhour
As seen in our October issue

Sure, being handed an empty warehouse, a handful of cash, and some of the best skaters in the world can make for some undeniably creative skate setups. But the honest truth is that our most beloved dream spots over the years have occurred naturally at the hands of an unsuspecting architect in the urban fields. As such, some of our most cherished non-designated playgrounds around the world have at times been struck down—lost forever to the dreaded knob, strategically placed flower bed, sandpit landing patch, or tragic full-time supervision by some poor extension of the law and order racket. Most legendary street spots have fallen never to return. But a rare few have been nursed back to health, raised from the dead, or simply re-ignited by our creative interest to live a new day of skateboard seduced symbiosis. The following are ten notable resurrected spots since The Turf came back from the roller disco grave in the late 80s.

1. Hubba Hideout—San Francisco, CA
The O.G. namesake of millions of ledges down stairs watched Kalis switch back tail, Garcia nollie flip noseslide, and Koston back noseblunt before she was seemingly 187’d in ’00 by the city placing benches at the tops of the stairs and hefty knobs down the slabs. But in ’06, a few ambitious locals hacked off the knobs, leading to a solid year of resurrected assault. Exasperated, the powers that be struck again in ’07 with the aforementioned sandpit landing. Yet, even today, dedicated soldiers like B.A. and Ramondetta continue to keep Hubba alive. According to sources in the city, “You just have to be precise and pop back onto the bricks.”

A Hubba history segment from On Video in 2001.

2. Brooklyn Banks Nine-Stair Rail—New York City, NY
The historic brick-lined gift to New York’s skateboard scene nurtured some of the East’s greatest talent and best times since the Bones Brigade logged footage there in Future Primitive (’85)*. However, following 9/11** the NYPD designated the banks a parking lot for the city’s squad cars and go time became sparse. Meanwhile, the nine-stair rail (see Jamie Thomas’ opening line in Welcome To Hell [’96]), which had been taken out (or stolen by a rollerblader depending on your sources) around ’98, then shortly revived by a Vinny Raffa-installed replica, disappeared entirely until the Banks were officially renovated and designated a multi-use/skatepark in ’07.

Jamie Thomas back lips the nine in his first trick in his opening line in Welcome To Hell.

3. Chain To Bank—San Diego, CA
Sometimes a spot doesn’t even need to get deaded for coverage and attention to dry up. Sometimes all it takes is a video summary of Tom Penny “closing it down” à la Anthology (’00) and we simply lose the drive to go back. For whatever reasons, however, SD’s chain to bank is back. Now the home of double flips and mannys, perhaps skateboarding’s collective consciousness simply needed this long to recover from the stunning hangover of Tom’s one-day magical assault.

The story behind Tom Penny’s chain to bank annihilation in TWSAnthology.

4. Cardiel Ledge—San Francisco, CA
The words legend and Cardiel are about as interchangeable as Sarah Palin and her Tina Fey-enacted SNL parody at this point. Since John noseslid the big side of this lengthy California Street hubba for his Big Brother interview in ’92, it was knobbed seemingly for the count around ’00. Seven years later, anonymous Bay Area freedom fighters hacked off all impediments and the ledge currently sits liberated and ready for action.

Reese Forbes tailslid the Cardiel Ledge in TWSThe Reason (see 6:36).

5. Venice Elementary Hip—Venice, CA
In a testament to the infinite scope of our ability to adapt, sometimes the “skatestoppers” themselves become embraced as entirely new obstacles. This was most certainly the case in Venice. When the school decided to end Natas, Stranger, Martinez, and the rest’s historic enjoyment of the hip by closing it off with suspended metal bars, Venice locs proceeded to make the curved flatbar at the bottom of the bank a new spot altogether. Give us lemons—we make lemonade.

Andy Howell skates the hip and the “skatestopper” flatbar at 3:20.

6. Earl Warren—Solana Beach, CA
You could hardly run through a video in the late 90s without the prerequisite downhill line there (solidly punctuated by Penny’s 411 Flip Industry nestled line ending with the asleep-at-the-wheel back tail down the rail). While Markovich had noseslid the gap to ledge in the self-titled Color vid (’93), the spot had seemingly gone the way of VHS tapes. Then somehow, Slash crooks in his Ride The Sky (’08) line and this one-hitter is all up in the mags again. However, newly installed gates have put a stop to Earl’s official welcoming back.

Check Wes Kremer’s opening switch tre bombs down Earl Warren in the Sk8mafia Am Video.

7. USC Ledges—Los Angeles, CA
Since Gabriel, Paulo, Rudy, and Guy hopped over the pole in Ban This (’89), USC was a 90s-long quasi-EMB for central L.A. skaters. Everyone from Keenan, Gino, AVE, Jesus, Wenning, and onward joined the mobs of camped out Mexican groms daily in annoying upwardly mobile college coeds on their way to class. While the subsequent campus security patrol cars and sporadic ticket eventually ended the all-day sessions, a recent development meant to dead the ledges for good has seemingly backfired on the university. With two-foot-wide dirt gap channels around all the benches, skateboarding once again turned water to wine by simply viewing what was meant to repel them as an added challenge.

AVE skated USC like no other. Just take one look at his Seek And Destroy last trick in Photosynthesis.

8. Pyramid Ledges—New York City, NY
These longtime NYC ledge-tech stomping grounds got the knob in the late 90s. Although they were briefly liberated with some accompanied video of Jake Lewis removing the stoppers in ’00, the building’s management quickly retaliated with a new set of bolted cockblockers a few months later. Fast-forward to last year when early fallout from W’s economic downturn caused said managers to lose all their building’s tenants. As a result, both sides of Pyramid are currently stopper free, and the spot is a full go.

Jake Johnson’s switch flip switch nosegrind on the pyramid ledges in Mind Field was most epic.

9. Place Masséna—Nice, France
Growing up Southern France, the red brick plaza and big three you may remember from such clips as Gino’s closer Cab in Hot Chocolate (’04) was our everyday, all-day EMB. Yet in ’05, with the city intent on building their new tramway right over it, the spot was fenced off and slated for demolition. Our local shop owner, Toto, went to city hall and convinced the mayor to allow him to throw a demo there and invited city planners to come watch how skateboarders used the space for a positive purpose. Long story short, a just-returned-home sponsorless Bastien led the charge with a six-hour free-for-all demo and the city agreed to build the tramway track around the plaza instead of on it. Merci, Bastien.

Here’s the closer…

10. Library Ledges and Gaps—San Francisco, CA
The S.F. Library ledges that accompany what should be known as Keenan’s Switch Inward Heel Gap have been either knobbed or a bust on and off since Lavar obliterated them in ’99. Yet, over the past three years, steady sessions have been slowly building up again. As of this writing, the ledges are up and running and you can catch heavy sessions there with some of Frisco’s finest any given Sunday after five.

Mike Carroll’s skates the library in his infamous opening line in TWS’ Modus Operandi.

Skate & Create II was a smashing success this year, and with the mag on the shelves, we wanted to wrangle up all four amazing videos in one easy to browse article. So here you go, we find they get better and better with each viewing.

DVS Wood

Intro by Matthew Deak, DVS Art Director
What you see is what you get. If I were to explain it in the most basic of terms, there was a stack of wood and there was skating. Doubles to be exact. The best part about skateboarding like all other forms of activities that can be elevated to art, is obviously they are open to subjective discussion. No “good” and “bad” or “yes” and “no”, but a lot of interesting things between the extremes. more …

C1RCA Broken Dreams

picture-31

View Video

Intro by Dennet Oyanguren, C1RCA Creative Director
The Broken Dreams concept was to put together a short film about skateboarding achieving a few different things. One was to put skateboarding and the viewer in a different environment than normal. The other was to have the team put together obstacles that they would like to see and session out in the real streets, that are good for tricks, as well as challenging and interesting to look at; design them, build them, and put those obstacles in our unique setting. more …

etnies The Legend Of Boxton Square

picture-21

View Video

Intro by Terry Snyder, etnies Art Director We aired out a lot of ideas leading up to S&C, but it was Mike Manzoori’s dream sequence storyboard filled with a cardboard city that had us sold. It fit what we wanted to do visually—the photos and video would be equally striking, and it was “do-able.” The props were lightweight, mostly recycled, the unknown obstacles could be styled to match our set, the video had a beginning, middle, and end, and it was guaranteed to be unique. The stage was set. more …

DC In The City

Intro by Mike Blabac, DC Shoes Staff Photographer
Basically our idea was to re-create cities by simply printing our black-and-white backdrops, and make the supplied obstacles look like real skate spots. We kept everything really simple to the point of being ghetto at times not to overproduce it and make it as skate as possible. more …
